Atkins Diet Facts: Induction, First Phase
In this article I want to discuss the first phase of the Atkins diet which Dr. Atkins call the induction phase. If you want to loose weight in the form of excess body fat, not from your lean muscles, you will need to follow the induction rules to the letter.
Induction Phase Definition
Induce weight loss by changing your body’s chemistry so that you will achieve lipolysis and the companion process of ketosis. In laymen terms your body will go from burning carbohydrates to burning fat (your fat!) for energy.
Induction Phase Rules
* Eat either three regular size meals or four or five smaller meals every day. Do not skip meals; never go more than 6 waking hours without eating.
* Eat combinations of fat and protein, such as fish, red meat, eggs, as well as natural fat like butter, olive oil and other vegetable oils.
* Eat no more than 20 grams of carbohydrates a day, most of which should come from salad vegetables.
* Eat no fruit, pasta, bread, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream, or butter. Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks.
*Eat nothing that is not on the acceptable list. One small mistake while on the induction phase will mean failure to loose weight.
* Adjust the quantity you eat to match your appetite. When hungry eat only what it takes to satisfy you and no more.
* Eat out as often as you like, watch out for hidden carbs in sauces, gravies and dressings. Remember no more than 20 grams at the induction phase.
* Avoid food or drinks sweetened with aspartame. Use sucralose or saccharin and count each packet 1 gram.
* Avoid caffeine, that’s right no coffee, caffeine has been shown to cause low blood sugar and that can lead to sugar cravings and we don’t want that.
* Drink at least eight glasses of water a day, to keep you from getting constipated; it will also flush out all the by-products of burning all that excess fat.
The first phase or induction phase will be hard to lots of you doing the Atkins diet, it was for me, the first week will be a big adjustment but at the end of week two and you have lost ten or more pound you will start to believe that you can win the war one small battle at a time. Get a copy of the one week induction menu it will take the guess work out of what you should eat. Do the menus for two weeks that will give you time to plan more meals. Follow the Atkins induction phase rules to the letter and soon the new you will appear in your mirror!
